Boys and Bikes

Boys riding bikes at Stevenson

I have always enjoyed my bikes, anything on 2 wheels.  A few years ago (before kids)  when my wife and I decided to look for a hobby we could do together, when she suggest road bikes I was in, what a perfect suggestion.  Now that we have kids they have both developed a love for their bikes as well.

Run Bike at the bike Park

There is of course their little two wheelers (they are both due for a bigger bikes), which they ride daily, around the house, to the park, or around the track at the bike park.  Our younger one still often passes on his two wheeler for the run bike, I think it is because he can put his feet down, easier on the ladders and logs.

We did try a bike trailer, but it never worked that well.  100 lbs behind the bike is heavy even on a small hill, and getting the boys to keep their hands to themselves was often a challenge.  So last year we upgraded to the trail-a-bike, these are great!  If we just let the boys pedal we comfortably cruise at about 15 km, and if they get tired no need to carry their bike home.  I also feel safer as it isn’t as wide as the trailer, and it still stops with you, even if they are distracted.

I never grew out of riding and it is great to see the boys  enjoying their bikes too, maybe in a few years we can take a family ride through the Rockies, this year I plan to introduce my oldest son to trail riding (easy trails, Fromme is still a couple years away), which I am sure he is going to love too.

Hey there. I really Enjoyed this post. I took my 3 year old for our first “ride” together just yesterday in a local national park. Pavement and gravel trails for 5km. Not far, I know, but he is only 3 and still on trainer wheels. We had done this ride before with him on the bike and me jogging but this was the first time we had attempted anything with both of us on bikes. It was wonderful. Will invest in a trailgator as soon as his trainer wheels are off. It was seriously one of the most perfect afternoons I had had for a very Very long time. Glad to Hear from other like minded people who take the approach that kids are really an extension of what you have always enjoyed and that there is no need to sacrifice what you really love doing just because they are there. I love travel…especially Asia. I’m taking him to Thailand next week. Very much looking forward to it. All the best to you and keep the adventures coming.

Sounds like a great day with your son! I am glad to hear you enjoyed my post. I completely agree, kids don’t have to hold you back, but can add a whole new element1 Have fun travelling!
